Antique Victorian *Gold Cased* Magnifying Lorgnette
Introducing the exquisite antique Victorian gold cased lorgnette, a true treasure from a bygone era, which ice not only a beautiful piece of jewellery but a functional work of art.
Crafted in *gold cased* fashion quite typical of the era, and a lovely hue nether rose not yellow but that antique rich in-between colour.
Intricate floral detail surrounds the frames of the lenses and nose piece, to a corinthian style detailed column and gold bottom loop also.
The name is derived from the French ‘lorgne’ which means “to take a sidelong look at”. Lorgnettes were invented in England by George Adams circa 1770 and remained popular into the early 1800s as more elaborate forms were created.
Quite a large example at 15cm long when closed and from less to lens when open 11cm.
This fine pair magnify wonderfully.. both in closed position and open, therefore possibly perfect for not only collectors but for those of use who peruse the antique jewellery centres! Wear this one on you favourite chain and inspect all you new finds!

CONDITION
Very very good antique condition. Magnify well both open and particularly closed, so handy! Lenses are in good condition, minor marks and to one lens three tiny fleabite nicks near edges of frame. Gold casing is in good condition, minor marks an patina here and there, no significant issues. Spring open and close well, sometimes opening a little jerkily, probably from years of non use, not a problem really.
Please note chains are for display only unless otherwise stated.
