A striking and rare example of 19th-century devotional jewellery, this antique Murano cane rod and gold (possibly gold-gilt) crucifix dates from around 1850–1890 and is likely of Italian origin. Quite likely a piece purchased by a wealthy traveller during the Victorian / Grand Tour period visiting Italy.

The cross is formed from beautifully striped Venetian glass rods (cane rod), often used in jewellery and ecclesiastical ornaments, their alternating black and white pattern creating a striking contrast that highlights the refined craftsmanship of the period.

At its centre is a finely detailed floral gold motif, delicately chased and accented by two tiny natural Pearls that add a gentle luminosity to the composition.

Measuring an impressive 6.2 cm by 3.5 cm, this is a substantial and visually captivating piece, both devotional and decorative.

The crucifix is presented in its original fitted burgundy velvet-lined box, the interior carefully shaped to cradle the cross — a testament to the quality and care with which such pieces were made and preserved, and indicates a high-quality presentation piece, typical of luxury jewellery from the late 19th century.

Crucifixes of this calibre, combining Murano glass artistry with fine Victorian-era goldwork, are increasingly scarce and highly sought after. This example stands out for its lovely condition, refined design, and original presentation — a truly rare and beautiful survivor from a bygone age of craftsmanship.

CONDITION
Very very good antique condition.  The crucifix is all original, non chips or damages to the Murano can rods.  Gold work is in very good condition with some patina here and there.  Original oval top bale is in very good condition, still strong.
The case has had a repair to the two (see photo) rear corners some time in history, however is opens and closes perfectly with a snap.  Inside the case the velvet fitted area and satin to the lid show only very slight wear and marks.
