Large in proportions this Georgian ‘gold cased’ fob seal has been intricately chased with ornate foliate and scrolling throughout and is set with a large uninscribed Bloodstone to the base. (XRF tested as 11ct yellow gold over/cased sterling silver).

In the 18th and 19th century fobs were worn as a decorative addition to accompany a pocket watch.  The base, sometimes set with glass, amethyst or citrines or agates as in this case - bloodstone - which were often carved with family crests or initials then used to stamp a persons signature or crest in sealing wax on important correspondence or sentimental messages.

Some, such as this one, were never inscribed.

Measuring a large 2.3cm x 2.0cm to the base and standing an impressive 3.0cm tall this hefty fob seal looks stunning on a variety of chains and the bale/top loop is quite accommodating at approx 6mm wide.

CONDITION
Very good antique condition.  Bright and lush with the appearance of high carat gold.  Minor losses to gold casing seen under scrutiny only, this one appears to be gold casing over sterling silver, not base metal, which minimises the appearance of losses.  In fine condition for its age and looks amazing around the neck.
