Antique Early Victorian 15ct Tortoise Shell ‘Fouled Anchor’ Brooch/Pendant Circa 1840-1860
Yes we said ‘Foul’!
A ‘fouled’ anchor is a nautical term for an anchor which has become ‘entwined’ in its own chain or rope, and symbolically, the intertwining in this fine example denotes the joining and cleaving of two people in love or friendship. The anchor has a long history in the symbolism of jewellery, denoting hope, steadfastness, fidelity and peace.
The addition of a Heart to the shank of the Anchor takes this piece to a whole new level, such a sentimental and wonderful piece of Victorian jewellery symbolism.
Crafted from Tortoise Shell and overlayed with intricate applied filigree 15ct gold work and two tiny turquoise cabochons to the ‘Crown’ of the anchor and also to the centre of the Heart.
A large piece she measures 7.4cm x 4cm including the top bale which is wide and large and will accommodate a large gauge chain. Original brooch fitting, pin and C clasp to the verso makes this a very versatile piece of jewellery.
VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM
A very similar example can be viewed via the Victoria & Albert Museum, featuring filigree work of spirals (cannetille) and granules (grainti) together with Turquoise as featured on our piece (circa 1825), characteristic of the era and workmanship.

CONDITION
Very very good antique condition. Turquoise is original with no re-gluing. Intricate gold work is in fine condition. Slight marks to gold on ‘flukes’ (pointy bits on anchor arms) and slight lifting to one but completely stable. Pin, fitting and C clasp are in ‘gold fill’ or similar, and show some patina. Top round bale may or may not be original, if not it suits the piece very very well. In fine and lovely antique condition throughout.
Please note boxes and chains are for display only unless otherwise stated.
