We are delighted to offer quite a rare piece of jewellery by South Australian jeweller, August L. Brunkhorst.

Brunkhorst emigrated to Australia in 1875 (full history below), already a skilled jeweller, and by 1884 had established himself at the corner of Rundle and Charles Street Adelaide, having acquired Henry Steiner’s business and stock.

Crafted from 9ct rose gold, this locket exudes an elegance, simplicity and sophistication, in fact Brunkhorst was known for his refined, free from excessive ornamentation, style.

Its double-sided design, with screw top bale, allows you to display two cherished memories, keeping them close to your heart at all times.

A large example at 3.6cm round and a lovely drop of 4.6cm once including the top bale, which can be worn with your favourite chain or perhaps a black velvet ribbon.

August Brunkhorst passed away in 1919, however his legacy lives on through this remarkable locket, a testament to his talent and dedication.

History of August L. Brunkhorst 1884-1919

August L. Brunkhorst, a trained jeweller, emigrated from Germany to South Australia in 1875.  Between around 1875 to 1883 Brunkhorst was probably working with Kindermann and Co. in Rundle Street Adelaide (he was almost definitely the ‘Co.’).  

By 1884 Brunkhorst had acquired Henry Steiner’s business which was located in the premises at the corner of Rundle And Charles Streets Adelaide, and had acquired Steiner’s remaining stock.

He continued to manufacture presentation silverware and jewellery and he is work was considered relatively plain and free of excessive ornamentation which was considered to be more advanced than those of many of his contemporaries.

August Brunkhorst passed way in 1919 at the age of 71.  His business was acquired by Caris Bros of Western Australia, providing the WA firm with an entry into South Australia.

CONDITION
Very good to excellent antique condition.  Panes are in excellent condition with no abrasions or wear. Screw mechanism works perfectly and closes tight.  Gold has taken on a rosy/yellow hue which we have not over cleaned, lovely as is. Brunkhorsts’ hallmark is crisp and legible.  No issues to note.
