Charming early Edwardian Australian brooch by one of our lesser know but long standing jewellery firms - Mackay and Co. ( previously known as D.Mackay ).
Crafted from 9ct rose gold with a ‘bloomed’ finish ** in classic shield and bar fashion.

Beautifully ornate in style with fine chasing and detailed scroll work and set to the centre with shield shape to which a red paste stone the colour of a ruby is set.
Bordering on pristine in condition this all original brooch looks just beautiful adorning any jacket lapel or crisp white shirt collar.

History of Blooming

Blooming, a popular finishing technique for karat gold jewelry from 1870 to 1890, was first documented in 1853. The means for creating a bloom finish involved dipping a karat into a boiling mixture of hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid), saltpeter (potassium nitrate), salt and water. This process burned off any alloys on the surface resulting in an alloy-free, thin layer of soft, pure gold on the item.
