Antique Australian 9ct Gold Green Garnet Doublet Cross Circa 1910
Charming early Australian cross/crucifix dating to the first decade of the 20th century.
Modelled in 9ct rose gold which has been ‘bloomed’ to give a higher carat yellow gold matte finish.
Blooming, a popular finishing technique for karat gold jewellery from 1870 to 1890, was first documented in 1853. The means for creating a bloom finish involved dipping a karat gold item into a boiling mixture of hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid), saltpeter (potassium nitrate), salt and water. This process burned off any alloys on the surface resulting in an alloy-free, thin layer of soft, pure gold on the item.
Set with a vibrant round green garnet doublet and tested as such this early piece of jewellery is hollow in design, large at 4.2cm x 3cm (without jump ring) and the jump ring is a good size and will accommodate a decent sized chain.
Stamped to the back with a makers mark and ‘9’ however the makers mark(s) are illegible but 100% Australian.

CONDITION
Very very good antique condition. No dents/dings. Blooming is very much there and intact, matte higher gold finish throughout. No chips to garnet topped doublet, well set and secure.
