Quite an uncommon find, this ring by lesser known but no less important early Australian jeweller Frederick Bassé of Adelaide 1881 - 1923.

The literature indicates Bassé arrived in Australia in 1881 and, that year, exhibited at the Adelaide Exhibition where his work was reported as ‘being brilliant’.

This elegantly simple ring is crafted by him, hallmarked superbly as such, and is crafted from 18ct rose gold.  Given the hallmark style used by Bassé this lovely ring would date to around the turn of the century circa 1900 or slightly before.

Measuring a wide but not too wide 5mm for its full circumference, a comfortable half round shape, and, in remarkable condition that belies its century plus age, this ring could be the sustainable choice for a ‘new/old’ wedding ring or simply you favourite new / antique stacking ring.

Frederick Bassé, F. Bassé and Co. 1881 - 1923

Frederich Bassé arrived in South Australia from Dusseldorf Germany and by 1881 had established himself as a diamond setter in Adelaide.

Exhibiting at the Adelaide Exhibition in 1881, it was reported that “… F. Bassé - jeweller - of Gawler Place exhibits a case of diamond and other jewellery, the collection, though not large, being brilliant …”.

Moving to 92 Rundle Street in 1884 where his business prospered.  By 1890 the establishment occupied numbers 92 to 94 Rundle Street.

Early in the 20th century the firm became F. Bassé and Co., and continued to trade until 1923.
