Antique 9ct Rose Gold Hawkes Eye (Blue Tigers Eye) Large Fob Pendant Circa 1900
A superb antique (probably Australian) Fob pendant dating to around the turn of the century circa 1900.
This large and striking beautiful piece of jewellery would have originally been worn on a fob watch chain at the waistcoat of a gentleman. Worn these days as a pendant and boy… what a pendant!
Capped in 9ct rose gold which is chased with a lovely floral patterning, to the magnificent stone below which is quite often incorrectly called Tiger eye or blue tiger eye…. It is in face Hawkes Eye which is a blue grey to blue green opaque gemstone variety of fibrous quartz famed for its chatoyancy. Closely related to tigers eye and Peitersite both which also exhibit a chatoyancy.
This wonderful piece does have a few streaks or the orange banding seen in Tigers eye but its base colour is a blue/green/grey.
When the light hits this one we see rolling, winding thin chatoyant effect rolling up and down and around this mesmerising gem, one of the most stunning pieces we have ever seen!
Large at 5.1cm (not including the 1.1cm round bale) and 1.4 wide at the base and a hefty 13.4 grams this spectacular piece of turn of the century jewellery is a must for the serious collector.
