Antique 15ct Rose Gold Sovereign Case - Birmingham 1901 - By Alfred Wigley
Crafted in 1901 in Birmingham by Alfred Wigley - Terrace road Birmingham, from 15ct rose gold and hallmarked to the inside of the case as such.
Interestingly the spring loaded platform for the sovereigns and its associated rim are also hallmarked for Birmingham but in 9ct gold and stamped as such.
Two possibilities exist, one, it was crafted this way, or two, the most likely is that this inner section may have been replaced sometime in the last 121 years. If so it’s been expertly and lovingly done and with the identical fittings, just in 9ct rose gold instead of 15ct.
Rest assured it works perfectly and the main section, the case, is 15ct gold.
Worn these days as superb large pendants either on a chain or hung from your favourite long guard chain, either way these large and solid sovereign cases look incredible and always draw compliments.
Measuring a substantial 3cm in diameter not including the jump ring to the top which when accounted for has a drop of 4.5cm.
Beautifully chased to the front and back in a delicate ornate floral design and one side has a plain round cartouche just waiting for your personal initials if desired.

CONDITION
Very good antique 121 year old condition. No dent or dings to from or back of case. Opens and closes just the way it should fastens tightly. Minor marks to plain cartouche to one side, insignificant and could be polished to new. As mentioned inner rim and spring loaded platform are in 9ct gold. Platform springs perfectly.
