Antique Early Victorian Belgian ‘Flemish’ Diamond Cross Circa 1850
This fine example was not only a symbol of faith but a high fashion piece worn by the wealthy in cities all over Europe.
Crafted in circa 1850 in Antwerp Belgium no emblem was more revered than the cross.
The deep devotion the Flemish people had for the Madonna in the late 18th to early 19th century is believed to be the influence for this style of cross, with the ‘star’, ’sun’ or ‘rose’ diamond studded bale, seen on many pieces including this one, known to symbolise the Madonna.
Hand crafted from Silver with 18ct gold washed back and set to the front with ten **’Senaille’ cut and rose cut diamonds, all of which are foil-backed and set in cut down collet settings typical of the era.
With a magnificent articulated bale in the motif of the above mentioned rose, sun or star motif, with a large rear loop to accomodate most chains or a beautiful black ribbon.
A true collectors piece, this jewel is a fine example of the period and to the craftsmanship of the jewellery in Antwerp.
History of Senaille and Rose-cuts
A small diamond chip with a flat base and cut in an irregular shape, usually somewhat in the form of a simplified circular rose-cut diamonds. Such chips were used in jewellery rather for their effect then for their intrinsic value.
