Antique French Art Nouveau ALBERT’ Brooch 1890-1910
A rare and charming piece dating to the Art Nouveau era and likely manufactured in France during this era.
The Art Nouveau style of the brooch aligns with the late 19th-century cultural flourishing in France, including in rural areas like Burelles, and our research indicates the shield / coat of arms, was possibly used by a noble family in this area. Artisans in northern France, influenced by Parisian trends, often incorporated local motifs into their work. The brooch could have been commissioned or crafted by a jeweller in a nearby town like Vervins or Laon, potentially for a resident of Burelles or as a commemorative item tied to the commune’s history.
The brooch’s design elements—such as the coronet, shield, and birds—suggest a heraldic or symbolic influence, common in European jewellery from the 19th century, particularly during the Art Nouveau or Victorian periods. This period saw a revival of heraldic motifs and personalised jewellery consistent with the Art Nouveau movement (1890s–1910s).
Crafted from a very low carat gold with silver over, and featuring the name ‘Albert’ to both the crowned element of the brooch, and in letter form suspended below, original pin and C clasp to the verso.
An interesting piece to say the least, and perhaps perfect for those who the name Albert or ties with France have special meaning.
