Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Locket And Bookchain Circa 1880-1890’s
This magnificent antique Victorian sterling silver locket and book chain, dating from the 1880s–1890s, is a true statement piece — bold, elegant, and steeped in history. Every detail reflects the superb craftsmanship of the late Victorian era, when silver jewellery was at the height of fashion and symbolism played a central role in design.
The large oval locket, measuring 4.5 cm x 3.5 cm, is beautifully engraved on both sides. One panel features a delicate foliate pattern surrounding a blank triangular shaped cartouche, ready to be engraved with initials if desired.
The reverse is equally striking, decorated with scrolling leaves and a belt-and-buckle motif— a popular Victorian symbol representing loyalty, strength, and eternal love. The belt, often seen as a token of fidelity, was a sentimental emblem worn to signify unbreakable bonds and steadfast affection.
Suspending the locket is a superbly engraved sterling silver book chain, each link intricately detailed with alternating floral and geometric designs that catch the light beautifully. The chain retains its original bolt ring clasps and, unusually, its matching extension piece, allowing it to be worn in two ways — either with the extension dropping elegantly to display the locket or attached for a longer, more relaxed fit. The chain measures 43.5 cmin circumference, extending to 48 cm when the additional section is used.
Together, the locket and chain form a visually stunning and historically rich ensemble — a perfect example of Victorian sentiment and artistry. This piece is not only a striking adornment but also a tangible connection to the romantic symbolism and fine silverwork of the 19th century.

CONDITION
Very very good antique condition. The locket has no dents, opens and closes very securely. Retains one internal rim only and no glass/plastic panes.
Upon close examination two tiny applied ‘balls’ to book chain are missing.. this is a shame, however a jeweller could manufacture and solder two tiny new balls if desired.. BUT this is very hard to notice though! Both Bolt rings open and close perfectly and are original/matching. No repairs or additions. Some patina here and there. All in all a stunning impressive piece, priced to sell given the very minor issues.
