This exquisite heirloom worthy antique bangle, crafted circa 1915 by the renowned Melbourne jeweler Thomas Gaunt, is a stunning example of early 20th-century Australian artistry. 

T. Gaunt and Co., goldsmiths, watchmakers and opticians, was founded in Melbourne by Thomas Gaunt in 1852.   Throughout is career he was recorded as showing at the following exhibitions:

The Australian Intercolonial Exhibition, Melbourne, 1866-7
The Melbourne Exhibition 1869
The London International Exhibition, 1872-3
The Intercolonial Exhibition, Melbourne, 1875
The Paris Universal Exhibition, 1878
The Colonial and Indian Exhibition, London, 1886

Crafted in 15ct rose gold, the bangle features a warm, romantic hue that beautifully complements its delicate yet quality design. At its centerpiece sits a rich, deep purple, hexagonal modified-cut, multi-claw set Amethyst measuring 16mm x 11mm, expertly cut to highlight its natural brilliance and elegance.  

Surrounding the gemstone is a series of creamy white, natural seed pearls (14 in total) to the shoulders of the bangle, top and bottom, meticulously set to add a touch of timeless sophistication and soft luster.  To the top and bottom of the Amethyst are six gold beads with an additional two positioned to the top and bottom shoulder.  

To the inside rear of the bangle we find a cartouche crisply inscribed ’T. Gaunt 15ct’.   This bangle measures 19cm (internal wrist circumference), which makes it a great size, not too big and not too small. 

Presenting in excellent, the craftsmanship reflects Gaunt’s reputation for quality and attention to detail making this piece a rare and cherished heirloom from the Edwardian era.  The clasp works perfectly and secures without issue, the original safety chain is present.  

Perfect for collectors or those with an appreciation for antique jewellery, this bangle embodies both historical significance and enduring beauty.

Excellent antique condition.  No chips or abrasions to Amethyst, well set and very secure.  All Pearls are original, in excellent condition, no re-glues.  No dents, dings or creases to gold to bangle.  Clasp works perfectly and secures without issue.  Original safety chain. A stunning example of Gaunts workmanship. Hallmarks clear and legible.

HISTORY OF THOMAS GAUNT, T. GAUNT AND CO. (1852-1979)

T. Gaunt and Co., goldsmiths, watchmakers and opticians, was founded in Melbourne by Thomas Gaunt in 1852.  In the early years the business was located in Little Bourke Street, then in 1867 the firm moved to a larger premises in Bourke Street which remained their location for over a century.

Thomas Gaunt was perhaps best known as a clock and watchmaker.  He is especially remembered for his large chronograph that was erected at Flemington Racecourse for the Victoria Racing Club.


In 1892 Gaunt and Co. was acquired by F.WS. Heath.  Heath had been a partner in T. Willis and Co., manufacturing jewellers of Melbourne.

In the late Victorian era Gaunt and Co. were producing stone-set jewellery and continued as manufacturing jewellers throughout the early decades of the present century.


From the turn of the century until 1979, when Gaunt and Co. were taken over by Angus and Coote Ltd, the company was noted for its production of ecclesiastical silverware.
The firm became T. Gaunt and Co. Pty Ltd in 1909.
