Outstanding antique Colonial Australian ring by one of our early Australian jewellers Robert Robertson dating to around 1905.

Crafted from 18ct yellow gold this wide beautifully engraved ring features a scrolling pattern for its entire circumference and is set with a solid white Opal which is multi claw set. 

Almost certainly a Coober Pedy Opal this one exhibits predominately blues and greens in a rolling colour play.

Wide at 8mm throughout giving lovely finger coverage.

We believe the Opal is original to the ring as we have seen similar examples however it may have been added some time in antiquity.  Never the less it is ‘right’ for the age and quite stunning.

Hallmarked with Robertson rarer hallmark of ‘RR 18 and a ‘Thistle’.

CONDITION
Very very good antique condition.   All claws securing Opal are original and excellent.  Chased pattern to and is crisp with no signs of wear.  Hallmarks are very crisp and clear.   We believe the Opal is either original or if not professionally set shortly after manufacture.  Under magnification there is miniscule signs of gold solder beneath the Opal gallery but this may well be original!, noting this for accuracy, this ring is stunning.

History of Robert Robertson

Robert Robertson founded his business in 1854 in Collins Street West, Melbourne.  By 1865 he had moved to Little Collins Street where his business flourished.  His son joined him in business in 1875 and became Robert Robertson and Sons.  Robert passed away two years later in 1887 at which time the firm had 50 hands.
