Antique Australian 15ct Gold Demantoid Garnet And Seed Pearl ‘Salamander’ Circa 1910
We are thrilled to offer this exquisite antique Australian 15ct gold ‘Salamander’ brooch, a captivating piece from circa 1910 that blends artistry, superior craftsmanship and symbolism.
‘Throughout the centuries it has been long believed that the Salamander, a small amphibious creature resembling a lizard, was impervious to fire and could extinguish flames, this was recorded by Aristotle and Pliny. It became an attribute of fire personified and, as such, was associated with the condition of the ardent lover, immortality, rebirth and passion’.
Crafted during the early 20th century, this stunning jewellery showcases a meticulously designed Salamander, adorned with vibrant demantoid garnets prized for their fiery brilliance—and delicate seed pearls that add a touch of contrast, delicacy and elegance. All Garnets and Pearls are original with no replacements.
Measuring an impressive 5cm in length and 2cm in width, this brooch reflects the craftsmanship of a bygone era, making it a remarkable heirloom or statement piece for any collection, particularly for the astute Australian jewellery collector.
Included is an antique box - perhaps original, perhaps not - by A Saunders jeweller - Sydney and London.
