Large and rare pear-cut faceted synthetic colour-change sapphire (sometimes called synthetic Alexandrite).

The star of this show is the large 1.9cm x 1.0cm pear shaped stone which is simply mesmerising.

In artificial light the colour is a very deep ‘royal’ dark purple hue with flashes of red and dark pink.

In natural light the colour is a pale mauve/grey/blue/green!
Beautifully constructed from 14K gold and stamped as such, 9 flat claws hold the stone very securely in its pierced and ornate gallery, to low upswept shoulders with a nice solid D shaped comfortable band.

In excellent vintage condition this ring this ring draws compliments wherever she goes.
History of Synthetic Alexandrite

True synthetic alexandrite itself is rarely seen because it is much easier to create synthetic corundum and synthetic spinel with color change properties that look like alexandrite.

Synthetic corundum changes from a purple resembling amethyst under artificial light to a greyish-blue in daylight where synthetic spinel more closely resembles alexandrite with its change from reddish to blue-greenish hues. (There is also genuine color-change sapphire which mimics alexandrite, as well as color-change garnet that can be a real fooler.)
