Charming and early piece by one of our well known jewellery firms Stevenson Bros.
Modelled in 18ct rose gold with a delicate and quite Arts and Crafts themed pattern to almost the entirety of the ring.
Rosy in hue, smooth and silky once on the finger and hallmarked so beautifully for Stevenson, 18ct and the early lion passant and crown marks used quite extensively by early Australian jewellers in Adelaide.
This is a little gem of a ring, early, collectible in its own right but still as wearable today as it was over 100 years ago.
History of Stevenson Bros'
Walter H. Stevenson was born in Melbourne in 1855. Earning his apprenticeship under the eye of Phillip Wing in Little Collins Street. In 1878 Walter and his brother William, a watchmaker, started their own business as manufacturing jewellers in Gawler Place then moving to Rundle Street Adelaide in 1881, becoming one of the best known jewellery houses of Adelaide, selling a considerable range of gold and silver jewellery.
Retiring in the 1920’s, Walter pursued his love of outdoor activities especially lawn bowls and cricket and was synonymous with the donation of the firms beautifully crafted silver trophy cups on many occasions.
Walters son Malcolm joined the family business in the 1920’s and the firm continued to trade as wholesale and retail jewellers throughout the first half of the 20th century
18c - STEVENSON - ‘Crown and Lion Passant’ used by early Adelaide jewellers
T 1/2 or 19.8mm diameter US 10
Very good antique condition. Pattern has faded somewhat and an early resize is apparent as there is a plain section measuring approx 10mm without engraving. This has been done early and very well and the resize is not obvious, and does not detract at all from this ring. Hallmarks are as new, very crisp and clear.PURCHASE SUMMARY
