Superb Victorian 18ct gold graduated mystical Snake necklace dating to the late Victorian era.

Modelled as a ‘fantastical’ Snake with a graduated and articulated chain which has been tested with an XRF machine as 18ct with the head of the Snake hand detailed and engraved in relief and accented in tri colour gold, rose, white and yellow, testing as 16ct gold.

Set to the centre with a large ‘carbuncle’ or cabochon natural Garnet and two smaller Garnets for the eyes and suspended from the Snakes mouth is a further highly detailed Garnet set heart shaped drop to which the rear displays a glass locket compartment.

The colour is a combination of rosy yellow gold, the main construction would be of 18ct rose gold with either ‘fire gilding’ or ‘blooming’ to give a higher carat yellow gold finish.

The chain secures via a push fit clasp, discreetly positioned to the side of the snake's head.

Strikingly beautiful these relatively rare Victorian pieces are superbly crafted, sinuous and evocative and are a collectors dream.

CONDITION

Very good to excellent antique condition. Chain is lovely and strong. No abrasions or chips to Garnets. Lovely antique patina to gold. Small chip to glass locket compartment but it is original very secure. Stunningly Lovely Victorian chain.
