Possibly one of the most beautiful pieces we’ve had the pleasure of handling recently, this very large and impressive piece dates to the late Victorian era circa 1890.

Is it or is it not a buckle, that is the question!  We believe it is and it is a beauty.

Very large and heavy at 6cm x 4cm and a hefty and substantial 16.7 grams.

Beautifully engraved with a floral pattern to each corner and beyond and set with four Persian Turquoise circular rondels.

‘Bloomed’ to give a higher and more yellow gold finish.

Bright, beautiful, of such a lovely quality and craftsmanship this stunning and unusual piece of Victoriana can be worn in a variety of ways.

To a jacket lapel, at the throat of your favourite button up shirt, thread a silk scarf through her or our favourite - on a wide velvet ribbon and worn at the throat or even wrist!

No matter where this piece is worn is receives compliments whenever she is seen.

History of Blooming

Blooming, a popular finishing technique for karat gold jewellery from 1870 to 1890, was first documented in 1853. The means for creating a bloom finish involved dipping a gold item into a boiling mixture of hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid), saltpeter (potassium nitrate), salt and water. This process burned off any alloys on the surface resulting in an alloy-free, thin layer of soft, pure gold on the item.
